SUNRISE, Fla. (February 1, 2010) – The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team came from behind to score twice in a 10-minute span with midfielders Morgan Brian and Kaysie Clark trading goals and assists to defeat the German U-17 WNT by a 2-1 score in the first of three matches between the teams.
The match was played in rain and was impacted three times by lightning delays, each of which lasted about 10 minutes. The first came during warm-ups, the second about 30 seconds into the second half and the third with about nine minutes left. At that time, the match was abandoned due to the weather.
The USA had scored the winning goal just two minutes before the game was called as Morgan dribbled into the right corner of the box and rolled a pass into the middle for Clark. The U.S. midfielder collected the ball with her left foot and then touched it to the right before driving her shot low into the corner from 12 yards.
Germany had gone ahead 16 minutes into the game after U.S. goalkeeper Bryane Heaberline mishandled a bouncing ball on the slippery turf and Lena Petermann took advantage, depositing her shot into the left corner from 16 yards out.
The USA tied the game in the 70th minute when Kaili Torres dribbled down the right wing and crossed into the penalty area. Clark took it down and quickly passed to Brian, who shot crisply into the right corner from 10 yards out. It was Brian’s seventh goal in 11 U-17 international matches.
The U.S. U-17s have faced their German counterparts in February matches in Florida for the past few years. Last year, a younger U.S. team lost twice and tied one game against the Germans.
The USA is preparing for CONCACAF qualifying in Costa Rica in March, a tournament that will send two teams to the 2010 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Trinidad & Tobago.
