U.S. U-18 MNT Ties France in First Game of Limoges Tournament
Oct. 9, 2013
LIMOGES, France (Oct. 9, 2013) – The U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team came back from a two-goal deficit to tie France 2-2 in the opening game of the 2013 Limoges Tournament.
France struck first with goals from Maxwell Cornet in the first and 29th minutes. In the first minute, a rare mishap by defender Shaq Moore against Cornet in the center of the field, 25 yards from goal, granted France a free kick. Cornet played the free kick past JT Marcinkowski’s outstretched hand and into the upper left corner with a left-footed shot.
Cornet’s second goal came by way of a penalty kick after Erik Palmer-Brown fouled Kinsley Coman in the box. Cornet once again sent the ball to the left.
The U.S. did well to come back, cutting France’s advantage in half in the 55th minute when Andrija Novakovich finished off a rebound of a shot by Emerson Hyndman. Rubio Rubin was fouled on the right side of the field, 30 yards from goal on the right. Mukwelle Akale played the ball into the box, where it bounced around before being cleared to Hyndman. Hyndman’s shot hit the post and the rebound fell to Novakovich, sent it into the open net.
In the 79th minute, Novakovich turned provider, setting up Rubin’s tying goal. The ball was played out of the back, up to Tyler Turner on the right wing. Turner hit a deep cross early to Novakovich in the box. Novakovich sent the ball across the goal to Rubin, who finished off the header into the empty net.
The U.S. next faces the Czech Republic on Oct. 11, before rounding out the tournament on Oct. 13 against Poland.
