U.S. Under-20s Open 14-Day Training Camp on Monday; Camp Marks Team's First Activity Since Qualifying
CHICAGO (Thursday, April 5, 2001) - Fresh from their undefeated run at the CONCACAF qualifying tournament, the U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team will regroup in Chula Vista, Calif., at the ARCO Olympic Training Center for a 14-day training camp beginning April 9. Among the 19 players U.S.

"I am excited to get the team back out on the field and working on what we learned in Trinidad," Suhnholz said. "This camp will give me a chance to look at some players who did not make the trip to Trinidad, as well as continuing to work with part of our core group of players as we begin preparing for Argentina."
The training camp roster includes the tournament starting backline of captain Nelson Akwari, Alexander Yi, Oguchi Onyewu and Philip Salyer, as well as the tournament's Top Goalkeeper, D.J. Countess. Brad Davis, who came off the bench in each of the team's first two games to score late second-half goals, and Kyle Martino, who scored the equalizer in the USA's 1-1 draw with Costa Rica, will also return for the Chula Vista camp.
The training camp is expected to include several matches for the Under-20s, including an April 11 clash with the L.A. Galaxy at the Rose Bowl. The USA is also scheduled to play two local college teams at the ARCO Olympic Training Center, facing UCLA on April 17 and UC Irvine on April 21. Two more matches are expected to be added later this week.
Shortly after breaking from this training camp, Wolfgang Suhnholz will travel to Buenos Aires, Argentina for the 2001 World Youth Championship draw, where the USA will learn their three first-round opponents. The World Youth Championship draw will be held on April 26 in Buenos Aires.
In preparation for the World Youth Championship, the U.S. will travel to France in May to play in the prestigious Toulon Tournament. Widely regarded as the top annual youth tournament in the world, the Toulon Tournament attracts a strong worldwide field each year. The U.S. will open the eight-team tournament against Italy on May 24, before taking on Colombia on May 26 and ending the group phase of the tournament against the Netherlands on May 28. The top two teams from each group advance to the semifinals on May 31, and the final and third place match take place on June 2.
The United States ran off an impressive 2-0-1 undefeated record at the CONCACAF qualifying tournament from March 18-22, outscoring their opponents 11-2, and sweeping the tournament awards. Including Countess' Top Goalkeeper award, the U.S. also took home the Fair Play Award, and DaMarcus Beasley was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
