U.S. U-19s to Face Denmark in Quarterfinals of World Championship

The U.S. team learned of its second round opponent tonight after the completion of the final first round matches in Group A as Denmark, which only needed a tie to finish second in its group, fell to Japan 2-1 and into third place in the group. Canada finished its Group A sweep with a 2-0 win over Nigeria, knocking the Baby Falcons out of the tournament. Japan's mild upset also knocked Group B third-place finisher France out of the tournament and earned Japan a quarterfinal meeting with European champion Germany.
Denmark, which is led by forward Johanna Rasmussen, who has three of her team's five goals, opened the tournament with a 3-2 loss to Canada, a game in which the Danes held a 2-1 lead. Denmark then defeated Nigeria, 2-1, before falling to Japan to complete group play.
"Like their senior team, and like almost all European teams, Denmark will be disciplined, well-coached and very organized," said U.S. head coach Tracey Leone. "It was good for us to have the experience of playing against England, another European team, to give us an idea of what we might be facing. We are certainly very respectful of Denmark's talent, toughness and pride."
Should the U.S. team defeat Denmark in their quarterfinal contest they would play the winner of the Japan-Germany game in the semifinals in Edmonton on August 29. The Brazil-Australia winner will play the Canada-England winner in the other semifinal.
