LA MANGA, Spain (February 22, 2010) – Forward Maya Hayes scored in the 53rd minute to lead the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team to a 1-0 victory over the Norwegian U-23 Women’s National Team in the first of three matches for the young Americans in La Manga, Spain.
The U.S. roster for La Manga features 16 players who are fresh off winning the 2010 CONCACAF U-20 Women’s Championships in Guatemala in January that qualified the team for the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Germany.
The match against Norway was played in high winds and with a goalkeeper – Adrianna Franch of Oklahoma State – making her first-ever international start, but inspired by outside back Kendall Johnson, the USA kept a clean sheet and got its lone goal eight minutes into the second half.
It came off a fine solo effort by the speedy Hayes, who latched onto the ball after Zakiya Bywaters won a 50/50 tackle in the midfield. Hayes flew down the right sideline, beating the left midfielder with a long touch and then took on the left back near the penalty area. She went shoulder-to-shoulder with Norwegian defender, pushed past her on the inside and dribbled to the six-yard box where she stuck her low shot into the near post. Norwegian goalkeeper Erika Skarbo made a low, diving stretch for the ball but was unable to push it away.
It was Hayes’ fifth international goal at the U-20 level
U.S. head coach Jill Ellis used all the field players on her roster.
"It’s great experience for us to play older teams and valuable in our preparation for the World Cup,” said Ellis. “Given the extreme wind, I though we worked hard to try and control possession and I was happy for Maya to get the game winner. It’s great for her confidence. I also thought our back line played very well and Adrianna Franch did very well in goal, especially considering it was her first U-20 international match.”
The USA will face the U-23 teams from Germany on Feb. 24 and England on Feb. 26 to finish the friendly tournament.
