CHULA VISTA, CALIF. (June 8, 2011) – The U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team defeated the Japan U-20 WNT, 2-1, during the first of two matches between the countries at the USA’s training camp being held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calf.
Alaskan Kelly Cobb opened the scoring for the USA in just the fourth minute. The goal came when forward Katie Stengel won the ball at the top of the penalty box and played it to Cobb on her left. Cobb took a touch and hit a low shot to into the near post from 22 yards out.
Japan equalized in the 13th minute as Hikari Takagi won the ball in midfield, beat a defender on the dribble and split two more to the top of the box before finishing low to the right corner.
The U.S. capped a wild first part of the match in the 22nd minute as midfielder Morgan Brian bagged what would be the game-winner. She played a give-and-go with Samantha Mewis and then shot from the top of the penalty box. The shot was blocked by a Japanese defender, but Brian – the 2011 Gatorade Girls’ High School Player of the Year -- picked up her own rebound and floated a chip into the upper left corner with her left foot.
The teams played three, 30-minute periods in the match. The two countries will meet again on Saturday, June 11 at the OTC.
