The U.S. U-20 Women's National Team fell 3-0 to Germany at the 12-Nations Tournament in La Manga, Spain.
March 10, 2013
Germany opened the scoring just five minutes into the match after the U.S. gave the ball up in its own defensive third and Annabel Jager capitalized for the first of her two goals in the match.
Germany doubled the lead in the 35th minute as the Americans once again lost the ball in a dangerous area. Theresa Panfil dribbled deep into the penalty area and slipped a pass to Jager for the tap-in.
The third goal came in the final minute of the half after U.S. defender Mandy Freeman was called for a foul in the box and sent off for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity. Lina Magull converted the penalty for the final margin.
The USA is in early preparations for qualifying for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup to be held in Canada. Players born on or after Jan. 1, 1994, are age-eligible for the next FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. The U.S. roster features eight players who played in last year in Azerbaijan, including Jane Campbell, who recently spent time in full National Team Training camp. Campbell, the USA’s starting goalkeeper in Azerbaijan, went the distance in goal for the USA and lost the first international match of her young career after going 10-0-5 for the U.S. U-17s.
The USA will face its counterpart from Sweden on March 11 to finish the friendly tournament.
The other countries at this competition are Iceland, the Netherlands, Scotland, England, Italy, France, Denmark and Wales.
