The U.S. Under-21 Women’s National Team is in training at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. U.S. U-21 head coach Jill Ellis called in 24 players for six days of training and several scrimmages which began Sunday (March 19) as she continues the process of selecting a team to participate in the annual Nordic Cup, being held in Norway this coming summer.
The USA has won an unprecedented seven straight Nordic Cups against the top U-21 teams from Europe. Numerous players who are eligible for the next Nordic Cup are spending time with the full Women’s National Team and the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team, giving Ellis a chance to bring in some new players for evaluation.
Ellis has called in several Nordic Cup veterans, including midfielders Sarah Huffman (Virginia), Manya Makoski (Arizona State) and defender Kendall Fletcher (UNC), who was in camp with the full National Team earlier this year.
Ellis has confirmed 20 players for the camp and will add four more before the training commences, but will give first looks to goalkeepers Cori Alexander of Portland and Veronica Simonton of USC.
Alexander played very well in the 2005 NCAA Final Four, helping the Pilots to the NCAA title.
Also getting first call-ups to the U-21s is defender Erin Hardy of UCLA, midfielders Marisa Brown of Wisconsin, Rebecca Moros of Duke and Lisa Sari of Portland, and forward Sophia Mundy of Houston.
The U-21s will face the U.S. U-20s in a pair of scrimmages on March 21. Kickoff is at 5 p.m. PT and 7 p.m. PT. The U-21s will also face the women’s club team Ajax on March 23 at 7 p.m. PT.
