CHICAGO (Oct. 17, 2010) – The Puerto Rico Islanders triumphed 2-0 in extra time against Vancouver Whitecaps FC to advance to the USSF D-2 Pro League Championship Series, while the Carolina RailHawks overcame a 1-0 first leg deficit against the Montreal Impact and advance to the Championship Series 2-1 on aggregate.
Carolina and Puerto Rico will meet in the first leg of the Championship Series on Oct. 24 in Bayamon, Puerto Rico at 6:05 p.m. ET at Estadio Juan Ramon Loubriel. The RailHawks will play host to the second leg of the series at WakeMed Soccer Park on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. ET.
The No. 8 seed Islanders and No. 5 seed Whitecaps needed extra time to resolve their semifinal series after playing 180 minutes of scoreless soccer through the first and second legs. The island club eventually came out on top 2-0 after the 30 minute extra period at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, British Columbia, booking their spot in the Championship Series.
Earlier in the evening, the No. 2 seed RailHawks used two second half goals to defeat the No. 6 seed Impact 2-0 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., and overturn their first leg disadvantage after losing 1-0 in Montreal on Oct. 14. Their two-goal victory secured a 2-1 aggregate score and sealed their passage to the Championship Series.
The playoffs consist of a two-leg, aggregate goals series in the semifinals and finals. Away goals will not be considered a tie-breaker in the aggregate goal series. If teams are tied on aggregate goals after the conclusion of the second leg, they will play two 15 minute overtime periods. Penalty kicks will follow overtime if the teams have not broken the deadlock.
