U.S. WNT Post-Match Quotes vs. Germany
SHANGHAI, China (Wednesday, January 29, 2003) - Quotes from U.S. Women's National Team head coach April Heinrichs and her players following the team's impressive 1-0 victory over Germany to claim the 2003 Four Nations Tournament in China.
Jan. 29, 2003
U.S. head coach April Heinrichs on winning the Four Nations Tournament:
"This is tremendous achievement for this group of players. They worked very hard over the last weeks, they've been an incredibly inclusive group, the team chemistry has been marvelously cohesive and they were determined to improve on last year's performance and results. These are the four best teams in the world and the reason we won is because of the USA consistency. From game to game, from tournament to tournament, our goal is always to finish first and we pride ourselves on that."
Heinrichs on her team's play against Germany:
"Our possession was the best of the entire tournament. We set out to control the tempo of the game offensively and defensively, by high pressuring Germany and then possessing it well when we got the ball."
Heinrichs on the USA's defense:
"It was our most consistent performance defensively in that we allowed very few shots on goal, we smothered every opportunity Germany had and we limited our unforced errors at the back. Our defensive commitment and intensity was the best of all the games and the best for all the 15 players who played."
Heinrichs on the value of this tournament to Women's World Cup preparation:
"This trip has been immensely successful on many levels. This group of players experienced World Cup-like environments on and off the field and got a taste of the excitement that the World Cup
will generate. We played in World Cup venues, and the players were able to play against the three best teams in the world. We also dealt with a multitude of adverse conditions and we played with three very different starting lineups. We had four different goal scorers and spread the playing time around so almost all the players we brought to China had a quality opportunity to perform and to experience international soccer at its highest levels."
Midfielder Lindsay Tarpley on her first major full international tournament:
"This is such a great experience for the young players to be able to play with and against the best players in the world in important games like these. The veteran players have really made an effort to make us feel comfortable and help us learn about the game at this level and we are very appreciative of that."
Midfielder Tiffany Roberts on the tournament as a whole:
"Coming out into these big stadiums with the huge crowds, I would get chills and have flashbacks to 1999. Of course, all of these fans were Chinese, but we can tell that this is going to be a great World Cup."
Midfielder Angela Hucles on the team's commitment to defense:
"We really wanted to be organized and compact in the game today to make sure we had enough pressure on the ball in the midfield and to take some pressure off our backs. We wanted to raise our intensity and I really think we succeeded. We have to keep building on that for the rest of the year."
