Heinrichs Names 18 Players to Face Canada on Saturday
CHICAGO (Friday, April 25, 2003) — U.S. Women’s National Team head coach April Heinrichs has named the 18-woman roster that will face Canada tomorrow at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. in a match televised live on ESPN2. Kickoff against Canada, a last-minute replacement for Nigeria after the Africans failed to secure proper travel documents, is at Noon ET.

CHICAGO (Friday, April 25, 2003) — U.S. Women’s National Team head coach April Heinrichs has named the 18-woman roster that will face Canada tomorrow at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. in a match televised live on ESPN2. Kickoff against Canada, a last-minute replacement for Nigeria after the Africans failed to secure proper travel documents, is at Noon ET.
The match will be the first of four international games during the WUSA season for the U.S. team as they move into the stretch run of preparations for the 2003 Women’s World Cup, running from Sept. 23-Oct. 11 in China.
Heinrichs trained 24 players for four days before choosing the roster. The USA faced Canada most recently on March 14, 2003, in Portugal during the Algarve Cup and slugged out a 1-1 tie in the opening match of that tournament for both teams. Midfielder Aly Wagner scored the lone goal for the USA in that game, the 10th of her international career. All 18 players named for tomorrow’s match were part of the USA’s Algarve Cup Championship team that defeated China, 2-0, on March 20 for the tournament title in the most recent action for the Americans.
Of the 18 players on the roster, 16 are playing in the WUSA this season with defender Cat Reddick, a UNC junior, and high school senior forward Heather O’Reilly the only non-professionals named to the roster. Washington, D.C. fans will likely get a chance to see two of their hometown favorites wear the national team colors as Washington Freedom stars Mia Hamm and Siri Mullinix were both named to the squad.
Should midfielder Kristine Lilly see action, it will be her 250th appearance for the United States, adding another milestone to her world record. Tiffeny Milbrett, who currently has 96 career goals, continues her quest to become just the fifth player in soccer history to score 100 career international goals.
Following the game against Canada, the U.S. Women will face England in Birmingham, Ala., on May 17 (in a match being televised live on ESPN at 12 p.m. CT / 1 p.m. ET). The U.S. Women will also face South Korea in Salt Lake City, Utah, on June 14 (7 p.m. MT / 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2) and Brazil on July 13 in New Orleans, Louisiana (3 p.m. CT / 4 p.m. ET on ESPN). The USA will play two more matches in September before departing for the Women’s World Cup.
