Tiffeny Milbrett Just Two Goals Short of Reaching "Century Club"
CHICAGO (Wednesday, September 17, 2003) – U.S. Women’s National Team forward Tiffeny Milbrett is just two goals away from becoming the fifth player in the history of soccer to score 100 international goals. Milbrett, who debuted for the USA in 1991, has 98 career goals and with just two more would join Mia Hamm (142 goals), Elisabetta Vignotto (107), Michelle Akers (105) and Carolina Morace (105) in one of international soccer’s most exclusive clubs.

Known as “Millie” to friends and teammates, the 5’2” striker is the fifth all-time scorer in the history of the world, behind the four players already in the “Century Club.”
Milbrett’s play on the field has long belied her size, and her darting, slashing dribbling style has made her not only one of the most exciting players in the world to watch, but also a fan favorite with thousands of young girls across the country.
Milbrett, 30, who hails from the small town of Hillsboro, Oregon, rose from a humble upbringing to become one of the greatest strikers in women’s soccer history. She played in only 20 matches from 1991-94, starting just nine and scored four goals in that time span, before bursting onto the international scene at the 1995 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Sweden.
Then a reserve forward, Milbrett came off the bench in the first match of the tournament against China after Michelle Akers was felled by injury just minutes into the opening game. She scored in that 3-3 draw with China, and added two more goals in the tournament to tie for the team’s leading scorer, beginning her run as one of the top performers in U.S. world championship history.
In the 1996 Olympics, Milbrett scored twice as a starter, including one of the biggest goals in U.S. Soccer history: the winning strike in the gold medal match. At the 1999 Women’s World Cup, she again tied for the team lead in scoring, knocking in three goals, including a key score in the 3-2 quarterfinal win over Germany.
In the 2000 Olympics, her three goals once again led the team, two of them coming in the gold medal match against Norway, including a spectacular equalizer in stoppage time of the second half that was one of the most dramatic goals in U.S. history. Her three goals in world championship finals are a U.S. record.
While Milbrett’s scoring has distinguished her on the international stage, her ability to create goals has also been impressive. With 61 career assists, she is third on the all-time U.S. list and holds the U.S. record with five assists in a match, coming on June 5, 1997, against Australia. Mia Hamm is the all-time leader with 116 career assists, many of them to Milbrett. In fact, Milbrett earned her 100th cap in the same match that Hamm scored her 100th goal, a 4-0 win over Russia on Sept. 18, 1998, in Rochester, N.Y. In that match both Milbrett and Hamm scored twice, with the two forwards assisting on each other’s goals.
Two of the more notable stats of Milbrett’s career include scoring in every match she has played for the USA in her hometown of Portland, Ore., tallying in all six matches, and the USA’s amazing record of 90-4-4 in games in which Milbrett scores. Three of those losses were to Norway, the first coming when she scored her first ever goal on Aug. 16, 1992, and another in the 2000 Olympic Final where she scored twice. In addition, from 1995 to 1999, she increased her point total every year, and even when she did not in 2000, the final year before the WUSA started, she still had 15 goals and nine assists.
