U.S. U-17 WNT Heads to Florida for Training Camp

The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team, under new head coach Dean Duerst, opened training camp last weekend in Sunrise, Fla., with 24 players.

The camp will run until April 21, during which time the team will scrimmage the University of Miami as well as several boys club teams. The match against Miami will take place on Tuesday, April 17, in Coral Gables, with a kickoff of 5:30 p.m. ET.

This will be Duerst’s first camp officially at the helm, after running the previous training camp as the interim head coach.

U-17 WNT Posts 4-1 Win vs. University of Miami

CHICAGO (April 17, 2007) - The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team, under new head coach Dean Duerst, rolled over the University of Miami by a 4-1 score on the evening of April 17 as forwards Lauren Alwine and Caitlin Mooney each tallied two goals. The training camp runs until April 21st in Sunrise, Florida.

The USA’s first goal came in the 10th minute off a throw-in from the left side. The ball was switched over to the right wing where Camille Levin served in a cross that Mooney met at the top of the box , only to have her shot blocked. The ball deflected out the right side where Alwine finished it back into the far post to make it, 1-0. Miami tied the game shortly after, but the USA responded with two more goals in the first half.

The USA made it 2-1 in the 33rd minute when Tiffany McCarty was played through and took a shot from the right side that was blocked by the goalkeeper, but Mooney was first to the rebound to knock it home.

Alwine got her second goal in the 37th minute after Christine Nairn won a header off a Miami goal kick, putting Alwine in for a one-one with the goalkeeper and she slotted it to the corner.

It was Alwine who set up Mooney for the final score in the 75th minute as she served a ball up the right flank. Mooney ran onto the pass and hit a dipping volley from the top of the 18-yard box for the final margin.

The U.S. team, which out-shot the Hurricanes 12-5, hit the post twice in the first half as well. The USA put 10 of those shots on goal while goalkeeper Jill Mastroianni was not forced to make a save.
