When CONCACAF established the Gold Cup in 1991 as the confederation’s premier event, the United States team was in the process of its re-emergence on the international soccer scene. It was a U.S. team in transition and a young Peter Vermes carried the responsibility of being the USA’s team captain heading into the summer event.
