Crystal Dunn looks to shoot as VDB and Chioma Ubogagu try to close
After having Saturday off, the U.S. U-20 WNT hit the field on Sunday for its final training before facing Germany in its Group D finale on Monday, Aug. 27 (ESPN2 & ESPN3 at 2:50 a.m. ET).
The Miyagi prefecture has been much cooler than the USA's stay in Hiroshima -- until today -- when the heat was turned up and the Americans once again trained in hot, humid and sticky weather.
The training was not long but it was intense, and the players are ready for a HUGE match against Germany that will determine their quarterfinal fate. A win and the USA goes through atop the group. A draw and the USA will finish second and advance to play the winner of Group C (for all intents and purposes North Korea). The USA could even advance with a loss, depending on the result of the Germany match and the Ghana-China game.
The quarterfinals on the other side of the draw are set as Nigeria won Group B and will face Group A second-place finisher Mexico, which hammered a New Zealand side (4-0) that seemed to have left too much on the field during its 2-2 draw with Japan in the second round of group games.
Group A winner Japan, which routed Switzerland 4-0 in its final group game, will square off against heated rival South Korea in the other quarterfinal. The South Koreans downed Brazil 2-0 to clinch second place in Group B, thereby sending the Brazilians home early.
