Abby Wambach's Q-Rating in Japan is really quite remarkable. We think it has something to do with not only her talent on the soccer field and how hard she competes, but also with the grace in which she handled the immediate post-game interviews after falling in PKs in the World Cup Final, giving much credit to the Japanese and their talented team. Of course, Japanese also like big things and well, Abby certainly towers over most of the people she has met here.
The 5-11 striker has been recognized almost everywhere the team has gone, with people pointing and many asking for pictures. Abby knowing a few words of Japanese has also endeared her to the fans.
Today after dinner, a middle-aged woman who spoke very little English recognized her, got really excited and came up to the U.S. bus to take a cell phone picture through the glass. Wambach obliged by getting off the bus to take a pic with the fan, who introduced Abby to her aunt, and all three took a photo.
She and a few other players were also stopped outside the restaurant by a college student and huge WNT fan from Singapore who had come all the way to Sendai to watch the match on April 1. Best night ever for Carmen from Singapore!
