The U.S. Women's National Team qualified for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup today via a 1-0 victory over Italy that gave the two-game aggregate series to the Americans by a 2-0 score. Amy Rodriguez scored the USA's lone goal in the 40th minute and the U.S. defense held firm to earn 120 minutes of shutout soccer over the Italians through the two legs.
After falling in the semifinal of the CONCACAF qualifying tournament, the USA was forced into this two-game playoff series, but came through with grit and gumption, and two great goals, to earn the sixteenth and final berth to Germany.
The USA out-shot Italy 36-11 over the series, and although the finishing was not as sharp as it could have been, the players can now go into a month-long break with tickets to Germany secured.
