The food here at the hotel has been excellent for the U.S. team at its base camp outside of Pretoria, but there have been a few "local" items on the menu over the past few weeks as well. We've had quite a bit of kudu, which is a kind of antelope and is actually quite tasty in stew form or as steaks. A tiny bit gamey, yes, but very tender and flavorful. We've also had ostrich, which was very tough and even a more gamey, but also got some good reviews. Did you know ostrich was a red meat? Anyway, today on the dinner menu was crocodile in a stew type dish. We read that it tasted like a combination of chicken and crab and you know what? That's a pretty good description. Croc is a white meat and mixed with a delicious sauce was more that palatable. We have no idea what's next, but we'll keep you posted.
