Clint Dempsey has a knack for big-game goals, especially to open competitions.
U.S. midfielder Clint Dempsey has now scored one goal in each of the CONCACAF Gold Cup opening games in which he has played, also scoring in the 2005 and 2007 openers. The goal in the opener against Canada last was the third of his Gold Cup career.
Don't forget that one year ago, he scored in the opening match at the 2010 FIFA World Cup against England and prior to that also struck against Barbados in the first game of FIFA World Cup qualifying for the U.S. on June 15, 2008.
Dempsey has now scored in every major tournament in which he has appeared for the U.S., scoring in two World Cup (2006, 2010), three Gold Cups (2005, 2007, 2011) and the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup. He has also scored in qualifying for both the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups.
He also continues to climb up the U.S. scoring charts, currently in sixth place and one goal behind fifth-place Bruce Murray.
