U.S. captain Julie Johnston places flowers at a memorial for the children who lost their lives in the tsunami
Like the full U.S. Women's National Team did at the end of March of this year during their time in Sendai, Japan (while the team was training her for a match against the Japanese), the U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team took a visit to an area impacted by the tragic earthquake and tsunami that struck this area in March of 2011.
The players stopped at a prefab structure in Yuriage in Natori City called "Memoire de Yurigage," which is set up outside a former junior high school, and whose three stories saved many children as they were able to climb to the roof when the tsunami hit. The building has been set up to serve as a reminder of that fateful day and to help the children impacted by the tragedy. At the building were artworks from children depicting the tsunami, the aftermath and a vision of what the organizers hope is to come out of the impacted zone as it is rebuilt for positive use by the people of the area.
