Danny Williams had never been to the United States, but he knew that he wanted to experience the homeland of his father. So at the age of 21 and on break from his club team, Danny and his brother packed their bags and headed to Miami. It didn't take long for him to be hooked.
"I fell in love with this city and this country after I came to Miami," Williams said. "The people were really cool and really relaxed, and you could talk to anyone."
They took in the sights and even caught a Miami Heat playoff game - Danny can often be seen sporting a Heat hat. The brothers wound up extended their trip an extra week - draining their bank accounts in the process - but the experience had left an indelible mark on Danny, and also changed the course of his international career.
"When I went back to Germany. I told my parents that I felt more American than German, and there was no doubt that I wanted to play for the United States."
