Pia Sundhage (left) is tied with Anson Dorrance with 92 coaching appearances, and Abby Wambach (right) is in a ninth-place tie with Shannon MacMillan with 176 caps. Both could move up their respective lists Sunday against Japan.
U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Pia Sundhage will pass National Soccer Hall of Famer Anson Dorrance in coaching appearances this Sunday.
Sundhage currently is tied with Dorrance with 92 appearances as the WNT head coach. She will move into sole possession of third with her 93rd game at the helm as the USA faces Japan on Sunday in the Kirin Challenge Cup (6:30 a.m. ET kickoff, televised on ESPN2 and ESPN3).
Sundhage is 77-6-9 since becoming the U.S. Women’s head coach in 2008. Dorrance, who joined the Hall of Fame in 2008, had a 65-22-5 record with the U.S. from 1986-1994. Former WNT coaches April Heinrichs (124) and Tony DiCicco (119) are at the top of the all-time appearances list.
Wambach Moving Up Caps List: U.S. forward Abby Wambach has a chance to move up the appearances list, as well. Wambach potentially could surpass former WNT midfielder and forward Shannon MacMillan in all-time career caps this Sunday. Wambach and MacMillan currently are tied for ninth with 176 appearances.
