We met one of the more unique individuals in all the Algarve today and his name is The Popcorn Man. Apparently, he sells popcorn at sporting and many other events and we have to admit, we were taken in by his ingenious marketing so much that we bought some popcorn ourselves to munch on during the team's training match against Portugal. And we must admit, Popcorn Man makes a mighty mean Kettle Corn that rivals the best we've had in America. Just 2 Euros for a big container of the sweet stuff. The Popcorn Man is so dedicated to his craft that he even has a tattoo -- of himself in his popcorn outfit -- on his right shoulder. Well done, sir. (Did we mention that he can jump rope in his costume? This guy is amazing).
But back to the scrimmage match. The USA won 5-0 on goals from Megan Rapinoe, Carli Lloyd, Lindsay Tarpley, an own goal, and a towering header from Abby Wambach off a free-kick. The Portuguese played low pressure for most of the match so it was a tough and hard-working back line to break down, but the USA found its way to five scores.
All four of the USA's goal were very nice, with Rapinoe's a dipping shot from outside, Lloyd beating several defenders on the dribble before her deflected shot looped in, Tarpley darting in from the right flank to finish across the 'keeper and Wambach jumping over everyone on the field to head home at the far post. Afterwards, a picture at dusk with the hosts.
