With the U.S. playing in the critical third game of Group A tonight against El Salvador, here are the scenarios for which the United States can advance to the semifinal and in which position.
The U.S. will finish in first place in Group A if:
- The USA wins and Canada ties or loses
The U.S. will finish in second place in Group A if:
- The USA wins and Canada wins
- The USA draws and Canada loses
While people believe that anything less than a Canada win against last-place Cuba would be an unexpected result, consider this: On MatchDay 9 of qualifying for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, the U.S. sat in fourth place in the group behind Costa Rica, Honduras and Mexico. In order to qualify that day, the U.S. had to beat Jamaica, Mexico had to tie on the road against Costa Rica, and last-place Trinidad & Tobago (with only one point through eight games) had to go against a Honduras team that had not lost at home throughout qualifying.
