As the U.S. Men’s National Team posted a 5-1 win against Scotland over the weekend – including a Landon Donovan hat trick – we wondered if that could have been the biggest U.S. win against a UEFA team?
Turns out, it was close. The Scotland game matched the most goals scored against a UEFA team, but the largest margin of victory came on Jan. 29, 2006, when the USA beat Norway 5-0.
Taylor Twellman netted a hat trick, scoring his first goal in the 5th minute before tallying again in the 17th and 76th minutes. Eddie Pope and Chris Klein also added their names to the scoresheet as the team out-shot Norway 24-2.
Check out highlights from the first half of the game:
Twellman discusses his hat trick:
The win against Norway had the MNT’s biggest margin of victory against a UEFA team, so here are the USA’s most lopsided wins in each FIFA confederation:
AFC: 5-0 vs. China (April 4, 1992)
CAF: 4-0 vs. South Africa (June 3, 2000)
CONCACAF: 8-0 vs. Barbados (June 15, 2008)
CONMEBOL: 3-0 vs. Argentina (July 14, 1995), Colombia (March 9, 2005), Paraguay (July 17, 1930), Peru (June 4, 1989)
OFC: 2-1 vs. New Zealand (July 24, 1999, and June 8, 2003)
