This game against Panama represents the USA’s first friendly match on Central American soil since March 25, 1993, a 4-1 loss to Honduras in Tegucigalpa. So why now?
“We wanted to take the players out of their comfort zone and give them a different experience,” said U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann. “It’s important that they have a chance to taste what the environments will be like in World Cup qualifying, everything from the food, weather, hotels and travel. For many of them, including the coaching staff, it will be their first match here, so it’s a chance for all of us to get a feel for playing away games in CONCACAF.”
