Afternoon training ended today with about a 20-minute 11 v. 11 scrimmage. There were no goals scored, but there was one monster collision. The protagonists in this body slam were defenders Stephanie Cox and Cat Whitehill. Cox was attacking full speed down the left flank when Whitehill, also going full speed, stepped up to win the ball and BOOM! The two defenders collided almost chest-to-chest with such force that both were propelled onto their backs. It was the kind of collision that elicits "ooooooooooooooh!" from the crowd. Amazingly, after a moment to regain their wits and surely a brief shot of adrenalin for the team's athletic trainers, both rose to their feet. A foul was called on Whitehill, but it seemed that Cox got the worst of it by a bit. You know you've been hit hard when your heart rate monitor is jarred free from it's strap. The players wear heart rate monitors during training that snap into a elastic strap around their rib cages and when Cox got up, she shook out her jersey and her heart rate monitor dropped to the turf! Give Cox credit for popping up quickly though and give Whitehill credit for the SEC football-style hit.
