We found out the other day that Lori Lindsey and Lauren Cheney had crossed soccer paths long before they played on the National Team together. Both are from Indianapolis, Indiana, and apparently when Lori was 14 or 15-years old, she got a job at the local indoor arena where she refereed the games of 9 or 10-year-old Lauren Cheney.
On those details, they both agree.
The rest, as you shall see, is up for debate.
It seems that about a dozen years years later, Cheney is still taking issue with Lindsey's refereeing ability.
"Lori was actually the worst ref I've ever had," said Cheney. "She was in high school and the games were at 8 am. She would just sit on the wall and I never saw her run once. She would just sit there and blow the whistle for kickoff and the end of the game, that was it. My dad knew every stat of hers. On the way to the indoor place, it was 34th Street Indy Indoor Sports, my dad would tell me, 'the girl reffing you today is Lori Lindsey, she is soooo good, she plays for Pike High School.' And I'd be like, 'dad, she sits on the wall. I don't know what you want me to say.'"
And the rebuttal:
"Well, I was like 14 or 15 and the games were like at 7 o'clock in the morning!," said Lindsey. "And it was bumble-bee soccer! So I would sit there and watch these little girls and there's barely any fouls. Every once in a while, there would be some bully that would push a girl over and I'd blow my whistle. That was probably Cheney. I think she was slide-tackling too and you can't slide in indoor. But honestly, that's the first complaint I've ever had about my refereering."
And as for the assertion that she just sat on the wall the whole game?
"I did sit up on the wall," admitted Lindsey, "but that was to stay out of the bumble-bee soccer play in case the girls came running by."
After further discussion, it was uncovered that Lindsey did make $20 bucks per game, big money for a high school kid as the U-10 games were fairly short.
"She actually admitted to me that she did not care, that she only did it for the money!," said Cheney.
"That's a lie!" said Lindsey, until Cheney walked a way. She then added, "But I did. I was making the big bucks."
