The only other meeting between the teams on Austrian soil came April 22, 1998, in this very stadium in Vienna. Both teams were prepping for the World Cup, Thomas Dooley had just been named captain and U.S. coach Steve Sampson trotted out the 3-6-1 formation.
Frankie Hejduk scored the opener, Claudio Reyna set up Brian McBride and then finished one of his own as the USA rolled to a 3-0 win. Also appearing in that game was current U.S. assistant coach Andi Herzog, who is Austria's all-time leading capwinner.
Here was the USA lineup:
Kasey Keller; Mike Burns, Thomas Dooley, Eddie Pope; Cobi Jones, Claudio Reyna (Roy Wegerle, 90), Chad Deering, Brian Maisonneuve (Preki Radosalvljevic, 70), Frankie Hejduk (John O’Brien, 80), Ernie Stewart (Jeff Agoos, 87); David Wagner (Brian McBride, 46)
