Amy Rodriguez and Lori Chalupny are happy to be back at training camp
The MNT has been at The Home Depot Center for a few weeks now, but the WNT has now joined them with training camp starting this evening under rainy skies. It was BEAUTIFUL in Los Angeles for two weeks, and now just when the players start arriving at the airport it starts raining? Ugh. Sure a practice or two in the rain can be fun, but it's supposed to rain all week so the U.S. team will just have to go to work in the wet stuff as the players shoot for spots on the roster for the 2010 Algarve Cup. U.S. head coach Pia Sundhage will name her 18-player roster for the annual pilgrimage to Portugal shortly after the conclusion of camp. Tonight's training was pretty fun despite the steady drizzle as the squad warmed up with passing patterns, did some 5 v. 2, scrimmaged to big goals on a short by wide field (one of the themes for these few weeks of training will be flank play) and then did some finishing. The GKs definitely got a bit drenched sliding around on the wet grass, but they love that don't they? Tomorrow will feature the usual start of camp fitness test (rain might be good for that as it's done on turf and the rain will keep the players cool), followed by another training that is certain to start off with some rubbery-legged players after giving their all in the Beep Test.
The lobby was alive with the sound of soccer players...
before the USA's first training. When it's raining, you wait for the team vans inside.
