Both Costa Rica and El Salvador sealed their place in the 2011 CONCACAF U-17 Championship this weekend, with Costa Rica winning Group 1 of the UNCAF U-17 Qualifying tournament.
Costa Rica topped Nicaragua 8-0 behind four goals from Reimond Salas on Oct. 27, putting the Ticos in the driver’s seat. El Salvador snuck past Nicaragua the next day 3-2, assuring El Salvador of a top-two finish in Group 1.
Costa Rica took the top spot after a 2-1 win against a spirited Salvadoran side in the rain, but both teams had already sealed advancement to the 12-team 2011 CONCACAF U-17 Championship in Jamaica in February.
The field currently consists of the U.S., Canada, Mexico, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Trinidad & Tobago and Cuba. Three additional teams from Central America will join the field in mid-November, with two more squads from the Caribbean also set to qualify later this year.
