Steph Cox can hit a driven ball, with either foot. This time she goes righty.
Not infrequently, Pia Sundhage likes to end practice with a little fun competition. Yesterday, it was the driven ball game. Each player gets one shot to hit the back of the net in the air from increasing distances. Everyone starts at the top of the box, and if you are successful, you move to the next round, and a shot from further back. Yesterday, after several rounds and from now about 40 yards away, there were just two players left standing: Heather O'Reilly and Sarah Huffman. With the entire team watching and glory in a WNT Blog post clearly on the line, O'Reilly was successful while Huffman's shot fell mere inches short of the net. Admittedly, O'Reilly was a bit emotional after her victory, but as the reigning driven ball champ, she will now hold the crown until the WNT plays the game next.
