MNT Dec 29, 2010
As 2010 draws to a close, many defining moments helped make this year memorable for the U.S. MNT and its fans. Countless goals, assists and saves were recorded, but it was one play in particular that captured the world’s attention: Landon Donovan’s goal in extra time against Algeria in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The goal not only catapulted the U.S. into the Round of 16, but on a grander scale the moment invigorated fans across the globe. After Donovan’s finish hit the back of the net, the reverberations that rippled throughout bars, outdoor viewing parties and living rooms throughout the country provided a moment in time no one could have predicted or envisioned.
The American public was enraptured (see exhibit A above … it never gets old!).
After the World Cup ended, the team’s performance, and in particular Landon’s goal, received a number of accolades, including the 2010 ESPY for Best Sports Moment and U.S. Soccer’s Best Goal award. As the sports world looks back on the entire year, that moment against Algeria continues to receive acclaim from sports enthusiasts around the country.
