The 2012 Development Academy Winter Showcase kicked off Friday with 80 U-17/18 teams competing throughout the day at Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.
Here are several highlights from the first day of action:
Robert Kerby scored all four goals for the Virginia Rush as the team shut out St. Louis Scott Gallagher Metro 4-0. Kerby’s performance led all individual scorers from the opening day.
CASL Chelsea overcame two early goals from the Vancouver Whitecaps’ Brody Huitema and rallied for a 3-2 victory. Kellen Foster and Evan Deycaza scored in the 52nd and 78th minutes, respectively, and Daniel Davis tallied the game-winning goal in the 89th minute.
Florida-based Weston FC doubled up De Anza Force 4-2 with Rhys Williams scoring two goals and Justin Santos providing what would prove to be the game-winner.
Among some other performances, the Chicago Fire’s Ricardo Aldape scored the winner in the 90th minute and Jeffrey Farina had two earlier goals for a 3-2 win against the Seattle Sounders. Pateadores’ Georgia United routed the Santa Cruz Breakers 7-0 with Daniel Olaniran posting three goals in a 15-minute span in the second half.
For the teams playing in their first Development Academy season and first Winter Showcase event, Orlando City SC played Met Oval Juventus to a 2-2 draw with Orlando City goals from Inaki Erkicia and Dujan Foster. The Portland Timbers fell 4-1 to the Houston Dynamo and the Montreal Impact dropped a 4-1 match to Real Salt Lake Arizona.
