Finals Week has showcased some of the best youth soccer players in the United States, and there are bound to be Academy players that have made the crossover to the U.S. youth national teams. This year’s Finals Week in Milwaukee is no exception, with players representing the U.S. U-15, U-17 and U-18 Men’s National Teams.
Two players in Milwaukee are in the U.S. U-15 Boy’s National Team player pool in Vernon Bailey from the Dallas Texans and Bryce Cregan from PA Classics. The current crop of U-15 BNT players were born in 1996 and represent the youngest players participating at Finals Week.
The U.S. U-17 Men’s National Team wrapped up the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico last month. Kellyn Acosta from FC Dallas and Jack McBean from LA Galaxy were named to the roster and missed the Development Academy Playoffs to help the U-17 MNT. Acosta, one of the youngest players in the U-17/18 age group at Finals Week, started every game on the back line in Mexico while McBean came on as a substitute in the quarterfinal game against Germany.
There will be three players going from Milwaukee to the Milk Cup in Northern Ireland next week with the U.S. U-18 Men’s National Team – FC Dallas’ Michael Ambrose and Boyd Okwuonu and New York Red Bulls’ Bryan Gallego. Eight other players at Finals Week are part of the U.S. U-18 MNT player pool and have been in and out of training camps during the year. U-18 MNT head coach Mike Matkovich has been on hand in Milwaukee throughout the week to keep his eye on the prospects born in 1993 and 1994.
Being a part of Finals Week is not only a thrilling and fulfilling finish to a team’s season, but it can also prepare and identify players to join the U.S. youth national teams.
