If you haven't a chance to watch the second episode of the series MNT in England, take a look at 'Life at Loan'
This was an interesting topic to explore given the fact that so many U.S. players were on loan for the second half of the season. Beyond the three we spoke with, we had Brad Guzan at Hull, Eric Lichaj at Leeds, Jozy Altidore at Bursaspor, and others.
The one big takeaway from the discussions with players and managers at different clubs about loans is that each circumstance is different. Sometimes a player is loaned out to get more experience and guaranteed playing time; other times the player may no longer fit in a manager’s plans; sometimes it’s to showcase a player for a possible sale down the road.
Conversely, players are brought into teams mid-season for different reasons. They may fill an immediate need; or be brought in as cover when regulars get injured; or it may be a case of putting a player on trial to see if the club wants to buy him later.
Of course once they arrive at club, playing time is a whole other discussion. There are a lot of moving parts there as well, which makes the subject of loans one of the more interesting features of the world of club soccer.
