Jermaine Jones and Schalke 04 will return to the Champions League after topping Hertha Berlin 4-0 and securing third place in the Bundesliga. Jones logged 85 minutes for Schalke.
U.S. starting goalkeeper Tim Howard and his Everton team blanked U.S. midfielder Clint Dempsey and Fulham 4-0 on Saturday at Goodison Park. Howard made two saves to earn the clean sheet, highlighted by a clutch stop against Dempsey in the 31st minute when he tipped the ball onto the post to maintain what was a 2-0 Everton lead at the time.
Timmy Chandler and Nuremberg earned a 3-2 victory against Fabian Johnson and 1899 Hoffenheim in Bundesliga play. Chandler, who recently extended his Nuremberg contract through June 2015, and Johnson both played the full 90 minutes. Hoffenheim was eliminated from European contention, while Nuremberg’s Europa League chances are hanging by a thread. They need to win their next match against Leverkusen, Hannover needs to lose to Kaiserslautern, Wolfsburg must fall to Stuttgart, and goal differential also is a factor.
U.S. forward Jozy Altidore started and played 85 minutes of AZ Alkmaar’s match against Feyenoord, but dropped a 1-0 decision as Alkmaar fell to fourth place and out of the title race picture. AZ is three points behind second-place Feyenoord for the league’s second and final Champions League spot.
Carlos Bocanegra and Maurice Edu both started for Rangers, but their team was no match for Celtic, which earned a 3-0 victory in Scottish Premier League action.
Steve Cherundolo played 90 minutes, but his Hannover team lost to Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 in the Bundesliga to end its Europa League hopes.
