U.S. Women's National Team Quotes - Sept. 22, 2003

U.S. Defender Kate Sobrero

On the defensive line-up with Chastain’s injury…

"All of the defenders can play anywhere, so April can put us where she wants. Everyone is able to play the middle, inside and outside."

U.S. Forward Abby Wambach

On playing in front of such a large crowd against Sweden…

"It probably seemed like there were 35,000 people above my crib when I was younger because I have such a big family. A lot of my family was there yesterday. At one point during the game I looked around and could not believe all the people. Before that I hadn’t focused on the crowd at all. It didn’t phase me though and getting any experience like that is good and important for my development."

U.S. Forward Mia Hamm

On Nigeria…

"They cause a lot of problems with their athleticism and speed. They are a little unpredictable at times, but they are definitely committed to winning the ball. We have to get ready, recover from our game yesterday and just get ready to play on Thursday."

On getting ready for Nigeria…

"In a tournament like this you can gain something watching them play, but teams can play you differently. I know Nigeria is going to be extremely motivated coming into the game and they are not out of it. If they get three points they are right back into it. We have to prepare for that and go out there with the mentality that they are going to play their best game."

On losing Brandi Chastain…

"I think it would be a disservice to her to say her being out doesn’t affect us because she has such an important role on the team. At the same time, Brandi believes in the players that will step in, as do the rest of the players."

U.S. Head Coach April Heinrichs

On looking ahead in the tournament…

"We’re not looking past the first round. If we look past Nigeria then we put ourselves in jeopardy. At the end of the day, we are just looking towards the next game."

On Nigeria…

"They are athletically gifted. I don’t expect for them to break. I expect when we get out there, they are going to be in a desperate situation because they want to get three points, so we will have to be prepared to handle their pressure. We will also have to come out and put pressure on them."

U.S. Defender Brandi Chastain

On if she can play through the pain...

"When I came off at halftime I said I could go the second half, but thinking about the whole tournament it didn't make any sense. If it were the final, we could have stabilized it and unload the weight on that bone and give it a go. Playing through the pain is something you can put out of your head once the game starts."
