China Wins Algarve Cup, 1-0, Over Norway; MacMillan Finishes as Top Scorer
The Chinese Women's National Team avenged a 3-0 loss to Norway at January's Four Nations Tournament in China with a 1-0 victory over the Olympic champions in the Final of the 9th Algarve Cup, one of the most competitive women's invitational soccer tournament in the world. China got an early goal from midfielder Zhao Lihong, and then protected the lead for the rest of the match despite a constant barrage of attacks from the Norwegians in the second half.
U.S. forward Shannon MacMillan was awarded the Best Scorer of the tournament after pounding in seven goals in four matches. Silke Rottenberg of Germany was named Best Goalkeeper and Bai Jie, who usually plays defender for China but who played forward during the tournament, was named the Best Player. She scored four goals in four matches. Germany won the Fair Play Award.
