USA vs. Switzerland Pre-Game Quotes

USA vs. Switzerland Pre-Game Quotes

On the match:
“We are very much looking forward to the match. We got the first game under our belts and I think the players are in a very good frame of mind and ready to get back on the field against Switzerland.”

On coming off the draw with Ghana:
“I told our players after the game that they still control their own destiny with this tournament. Historically, there have been a lot of teams that have had bumpy starts both on the men’s and women’s side as far as the first game who have gone on to have very good tournaments, but the most important thing is the game in front of us. It’s more excitement at this point for the players to get back on the field. We’ve watched film and looked at some things we can improve upon, but for some these players it was their first World Cup match and now they are prepared and understand what to expect.”

On keys to the Switzerland match:
“I think it will be important to keep our width and keep our players isolated at times so we can get players faced up. I’d love to see us get more into the flank space, and obviously getting width will help that, and then getting service into Syd (Leroux) and our other attacking players…I think our movement off the ball and different types of runs will help us. We need to be much more mobile and everyone needs to have confidence in their first touch.”

On some positives she took from the Ghana game:
“The ability to come back is important, and I like the fact that they didn’t cave and our second half was much stronger than the first. The two players that initially came off the bench also immediately impacted the game. Our backs at times did some really great things as well. It was a long shot that we gave up, but I thought we really limited their chances.”

On the Swiss:
“They are very much a European team. They play a very traditional system, are very disciplined defensively and look to counter with their two personalities up top. So we are going to have to be patient and try to open the game up because they do sit a little deeper and there’s not going to be a lot of space in behind. They are going to be competitive. They are in a position of potentially being eliminated so they are definitely going to have fight in them, but I think our hunger and our desire to get a result in this game has to supersede any kind of fight from them.”
