U.S. U-17 '90s Fall in First Match of USYS Interregional

AUSTIN, Texas (Nov. 25, 2005) - The U.S. Under-17 '90 Men's National Team fell 1-0 to US Youth Soccer ODP Boys Region IV 1989s in their opening match of the USYS Thanksgiving Interregional in Austin, Texas.

After a scoreless first half, Region IV was able to capatilize on a defensive mishap in the 62nd minute to score the game-winner. The U.S. was on the attack, but the ball was cleared to the halfway line where forward Andrew Werdeman pressured the last defender and was able to steal the ball. Werdeman dribbled towards goal and forced U.S. goalkeeper Josh Lambo to come off his line before pushing the ball square to his right for Guiseppe Carotenuto, who finished into the wide-open net.

Seven minutes later, Sheanon Williams came inches from scoring the equalizer when he received a pass from Ellis McLoughlin inside the penalty area, turned and unleashed a shot that hit the left post.

The U.S. had one final chance in injury time when a cross from the left flank found Danny Barerra wide open at the right post, but the forward couldn't get a clean hit on the ball as his shot went wide right.

The U.S. will next face Region I 1989 on Saturday.
