Goal in Waning Seconds Lifts Spain Over U.S. U-17 MNT

MADRID (Feb. 18, 2009) -- A goal in the waning seconds gave Spain a 2-1 edge over the U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team at the Cuidad de Futbol in Madrid during the USA's week-long foreign training camp.

Spain's Borja Gonzalez Tomas opened the scoring in the 18th minute, quickly turning and finishing a ball that was played into the box by Pablo Sarabia Garcia.

In the 69th minute, the U.S. pulled even when Jack McInerney put away his fourth tally of the year. Stefan Jerome did well to lay the ball off for the strong forward, whose shot got past Spanish 'keeper Killan Falcón Rodríguez.

Just seconds before the final whistle, Spain pushed for the game-winner on a corner kick, and after a goal-mouth scramble, Sergi Gomez Sola took a shot through the crowd that would count as the game-winner. Spain is in the midst of final preparations for the UEFA championship in March.

The U.S. will face a youth team from Real Madrid on Thursday and a select team from Rayo Majadahonda on Saturday before returning to Bradenton, Fla. on Sunday.
