Post Game Quote Sheet: U-17 MNT vs. Cuba

U.S. head coach WILMER CABRERA
On the game:
“At first we were a little hesitant, but as the game went on we took control and created opportunities. We took advantage of the opportunities that we had. We were very focused on the game and we had several good training sessions. We had a good victory but we can’t take anything away from Cuba, they were a great opponent and we must keep our heads in the game against Canada and Honduras.”

On preparing for Canada:
“Now what we need to do is get to work with recovery. Even though it looked like we had a good game, in the end a few of my players finished with cramps and were tired from the heat, so we have to make sure everyone can recover. Canada is a different rival. They are looking for the same thing that we are looking for. They had a tough game against Honduras.”

On how he thinks his team played:
“I think we did well. Little by little we took over the game. Most importantly we got the points. We played simple and in the end we finished. We are focused. We want to qualify for the World Cup. We worked hard to be here and we’re going to try to play and we want to have one of the tickets to Nigeria.”

On Tijuana:
“We got here a little earlier than the other teams to adjust and adapt to the city, to practice and the field. We have found that everything is comfortable. The hotel is good, the food is good and the people are nice. The weather is excellent, so we cannot complain. Our job is to come here and play and that’s it.”

On his team’s strategy for tonight:
“Our strategy was just to keep them under pressure the whole game and just create chances. We did that and we were able to finish our chances today.”

On looking ahead to Canada:
“We’re excited and nervous. But if we play our game like we did today I think we’ll be fine.”

On today’s game:
“Playing in front of all those people was great. It was something I had never done before. I really enjoyed playing with my teammates and we won, so I’m glad. Getting a goal felt really good. I felt it coming and tried to be patient but it finally came.”

On joining the Residency Program:
“Residency is great. I’ve been in Bradenton for almost two months and it’s phenomenal, really. I’ve learned a lot and it’s been hard. I’m not going to lie, it’s been tough, the coaches are tough on you but it’s all to make us better players.”

On looking ahead to Canada:
“The coaches brought us together and told us that this game is over now, and now we have to focus on Canada. That’s the next step and that’s what we’re shooting for. We’re trying to go to Nigeria.”
