U.S. U-16 GNT Defeats Germany U-17 Women, 2-1, at Home Depot Center

The U.S. Under-16 Girl’s National Team reversed a 3-0 loss on March 6, to record a 2-1 victory over the German U-17 Women’s National Team on March 9, in the second of two matches between the teams at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. An 88th-minute goal from forward Tiffany McCarty was the difference for the USA, which also scored in the 20th minute through Brittani Bartok. The match featured lots of offense as the USA fired 19 shots, 15 of which went on goal, while Germany struck 14 of their own. The USA opened the scoring when Maggie Kistner slipped a perfect pass to Bartok who found herself unmarked in front of the goal. She took a touch and slid the ball right past the German goalkeeper and into the net. Germany tied the game in the 80th minute after Kim Kulig beat her player down the flank and crossed to the far post over the head of U.S. goalkeeper Catherine Parkhill. Bianca Schmidt met the cross and to hit her first-time shot into the left corner. With the match seemingly headed for a draw, Kristen Mewis stripped the ball away from a defender and hit a through ball on the ground for McCarty, who made a great run behind the defense. She was able to beat a defender in a foot race and went one-on-one with the goalkeeper, tucking the ball into the right corner for the game-winning goal.
