Germany and Senegal Impress Early
Well, as I said, Africa's Senegal were athletic and creative. They showed France exactly what they are made of. In Paris, where my husband and the U.S. Under-21 Women's National Team are playing matches, he reported that half of the crowd in the main square watching the game were Senegalese. Not only were they cheering their team on, they were dancing in the streets. From the pictures on TV back in Senegal, apparently there is a lot of dancing going on. He said that the French crowd actually applauded the efforts of the African team, considering they all watch and love the Senegalese players when they participate with their clubs in France. Has anyone brought up the word "Cinderella"?
France and Senegal played like titans, whereas Germany, giants themselves literally, were up against an undermanned and undersized Saudi Arabia team. It doesn't seem that the Roy Keane situation has effected Ireland ( I am finally over the fact that he is not coming back, and after much thought, he shouldn't be) in their draw with Cameroon. Saudi Arabia will continue to be the whipping mate of that group. The winner of that group may come down to who scores the most goals against Saudi Arabia.
Germany versus Cameroon will be a battle royale. The giants of the group, and they literally are giants, will be one of the best matches of the first round. I am going to stick with my initial feeling that Cameroon will be the victor and advance as the winner of the group.
