U-20 MNT Downs Uruguay Via Shootout at Copa Ciudad de Rosario
ROSARIO, Argentina (July 26, 2009) -- Brian Perk, who saved a penalty kick against Trinidad & Tobago at the CONCACAF U-20 Championship in March, was once again the hero as the U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team downed Uruguay in penalties at the Copa Ciudad de Rosario in Argentina.
Down to 10 men in just the 27th minute, Thomas Rongen’s side fought to a scoreless draw in regulation and the team’s went immediately to a shootout per tournament rules. Dilly Duka, Sheanon Williams, Anthony Wallace, Tony Taylor and Jorge Flores all converted their penalties as the U.S. shot first.
Uruguay made their first four shots, setting up Perk’s dramatic save on their fifth and final shooter to earn the win.
Along with three points from a win against CA Tiro Federal, the U.S. has five points in the tournament as the event awards one point for a draw and an extra point to the shootout victor.
