Development Academy Coaches Find Learning Opportunities Surrounding Men's National Team Games

CHICAGO (October 15, 2008) – With exclusive on-field access to pre-game training, question and answer sessions with Men’s National Team head coach Bob Bradley and his staff and a forum to discuss various issues that relate to their own teams, coaches who are part of U.S. Soccer Development Academy clubs have personalized learning opportunities around domestic Men’s National Team games.

“It’s a different format for coaching development and education,” said Development Academy Director of Scouting Tony Lepore. “The idea is to take the opportunity to learn from our senior national team when they’re close by. As part of that, we get to have a discussion around training and the game and direct contact with members of the full team staff.”

While U.S. Soccer’s Coaching Education Department has long offered coaching symposiums around national team games as part of the U.S. Soccer licensing process, Development Academy Coaching Symposiums are specifically designed to relate the key principles from the National Team environment back to the development of elite youth players in the Academy program. The symposiums are part of the larger effort to improve the level of coaching in the Development Academy by connecting Academy coaches to national team resources, including coach mentoring, scouting workshops, exposure to youth national team camps and best practice seminars.

Development Academy Coaching Symposiums have been held around recent national team games against Brazil, Argentina and Sweden, among others. The series of symposiums continued last week in Washington, D.C., as the Men’s National Team faced Cuba in a key World Cup qualifier. On Thursday, over a dozen coaches from nearby Academy clubs were in attendance as the team ran a spirited training session. After training, Bradley came over and gave his thoughts about training before opening a dialogue with the Academy coaches about their observations of the national team’s practice applied to their Academy teams.

“The coaches usually have a lot of good questions and Bob takes time to answer them all,” said Lepore. “The most important part of these discussions is to bring it back to what we’re doing with the Academy-age players - how we’re training them, what kind of environment are we creating and how important it is to focus on developing as opposed to winning what can we do in these really key age groups to prepare them for the next level.”

On the day of the game, the coaches in attendance got a sneak peek at the starting lineup, and also a chance to discuss themes of the game relayed by the National Team staff. The Academy coaches also had an opportunity to interact with Academy technical and administrative staff to discuss the growth and potential of the Development Academy program.

Post-match, a member of the National Team staff talked with the Academy coaches to give an honest analysis of the match, including how the application of themes from Thursday’s practice, review of overall team and opponent performance and what this game means in the big picture of World Cup qualification. On Saturday night, assistant coach and former national team player Mike Sorber went through the key events in the game, including how they talked to the players and dealt with variables from the bench.

“The response has been great,” said Lepore. “The program has been well-received and it is a unique opportunity to learn. Who better to learn from than the top coaches in our country?
I think that whenever we can apply what they do to the Academy coaches, it can really have a direct benefit for the players.”

The next Development Academy Coaching Symposium is slated for Commerce City, Colo., when the Men’s National Team takes on Guatemala on November 19.
