    * In the meantime, the Red Devils continue to chase Arsenal for second place in the table and an automatic place in the Champions League
    * They get two bites at the apple this week, first traveling to well-accomplished Everton.  Despite their fifth-place standing, Everton will be looking to dump a huge monkey off their back - that monkey being a 20-match winless spell against the visitors
    * Then it's back to Old Trafford as they welcome weary Newcastle United who may still be licking their wounds from the FA Cup pasting put on by United over the weekend

    * Berhalter served out his one-match ban, the Cottbus captain watching as his side were handed a late draw and a crucial point in the relegation dogfight
    * An own goal off the head of John van Buskirk moved Cottbus to 35 points, three above the drop zone with five matches remaining
    * The task doesn't get easier this weekend as league leaders MSV Duisberg head to the Stadion der Freundschaft, having collected a 2-0 victory in the team's first meeting on Nov. 14 in Duisburg

Conor Casey
FSV Mainz, German Bundesliga
Record: 8-14-7 (31 points)

    * Casey got the nod after three appearances from the reserves bench, narrowly missing out on getting the equalizer as a kick save by fellow U.S. international Kasey Keller denied him the prize
    * But his teammate Michael Thurk did the business two minutes into stoppage time, giving Mainz only their fifth road point of the campaign while balancing them a precarious two points above the drop zone
    * With only two wins in 12 matches since the winter break, Casey runs up against another member of the U.S. rearguard as they host Steve Cherundolo and a Hannover team that felled them 2-0 in their first meeting

Steve Cherundolo

    * Cherundolo and company feel snakebit as a 90th-minute strike from Owen Hargreaves just before the final whistle handed Hannover their fifth 1-0 shutout loss in the last seven games
    * Despite the losing trend, Hannover still hold their Bundesliga destiny in their own hands as they sit nine points clear of relegation
    * Hannover have been remarkably stingy on the road, their 14 goals against the fewest in the Bundesliga

    * Keller has been 'Gladbach's man between the posts, starting every game since moving to Germany on Jan. 22
    * With only two points from five matches, Manager Dick Advocaat has chosen to step down and leave the relegation battle in the hands of Horst Koeppel, formerly the coach of the amateur team
    * With only one point separating them from doomsday and an anemic 0-9-5 road record, 'Gladbach will be searching for any result when the travel to face the Nurnberg side only one 'W' ahead of them in the league table

    * Beasley reached a personal milestone midweek by joining Jovan Kirovski (Borussia Dortmund, 1996-97) as the only Americans to reach the semifinals of the Champions League.
    * PSV advanced to face AC Milan after a 1-1 draw in regulation against Lyon sent the series into extra time and penalty kicks, where PSV triumphed 4-2 despite a missed Beasley penalty in the tiebreaker
    * They increased their unbeaten run in 2005 to 18 games with a 1-0 shutout win against Willem II, moving to within four points of claiming the Dutch league title
    * PSV have gone an astonishing seven straight league games without surrendering a goal, netting 18 in the process
    * They can move closer to a second piece of silverware if they get past Feyenoord in the Dutch Cup semifinal midweek, then move closer to party time as they host seventh-place Vitesse

    * Gibbs has started every game in all competitions since moving to the Eredivisie in January, playing 16 total
    * Feyenoord's nine-match winning streak came skidding to a halt as an atrocious loss to cellar dwellers Den Bosch and a home defeat to Ajax did major damage to their Champions League dreams
    * The loss to Ajax was particularly cruel, as the hosts held a 2-1 lead with only four minutes left on the clock
    * Feyenoord have to shake off the blues quickly as they face the daunting task of upending seemingly impenetrable PSV in the Dutch Cup semis, then refocus on their European hopes with a weekend matchup away to mid-table FC Groningen

    * Onyewu has been an anchor in Standard's central defense, helping preside over an 12-match unbeaten run since the winter break
    * Gooch has proved to be a Mons killer, scoring his third goal against them this year while having a hand in the other as Standard recorded their 14th shutout
    * The win puts Standard within five points of second-place Anderlecht and a Champions League qualification berth, making this weekend's trip by far the most important of the campaign
