U.S. Women's National Team will Play Brazil in Denver on Sept. 26 as Women's World Cup Rematch Comes to Mile High Stadium

CHICAGO (Thursday, September 2, 1999) - Two of the world's most entertaining, attacking teams will square off on Sunday, Sept. 26, at Mile High Stadium in Denver as South American champion Brazil gets another crack at the 1999 Women's World Cup champion U.S. Women's National Team. The rematch of the 1999 Women's World Cup semifinal match, won 2-0 by the USA, will kick off a 5 p.m. ET (3 p.m. Local) and be broadcast live on ESPN.

Tickets go on sale tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. MT and range from $15-$30. Tickets can be purchased by calling Ticketmaster at 303/830-8497, or for Group Sales information, please call the Colorado Rapids at 303/299-1599 or 1-800/844-7777.

Brazil danced its way to the semifinals of this summer's Women's World Cup with a vast array of weapons and a passion for the game that made them a fan favorite wherever they played. However, the Samba was silenced as the South American champions ran into a U.S. team with destiny on its side and a July 4th Independence Day crowd urging them on in the jam-packed Stanford Stadium.

The USA scored on an early head goal by Cindy Parlow after a goalkeeper mistake from Maravilha, then sealed their fate with a late penalty kick by Michelle Akers after Mia Hamm had been fouled in the penalty box. Despite out-shooting the USA, Brazil's dream of a first Women's World Cup title, to add to the four won by its famous men's team, came to an end. Still, the Brazilians took the bronze medal, their highest finish ever in an international competition, with a penalty-kick shootout victory over Norway in the Third-Place match.

It will be the first-ever match for the U.S. women in Denver, although Mile High Stadium did host the 1995 U.S. Olympic Festival soccer competition in which several current national team players participated. If the USA defeats Ireland this Saturday, a victory over Brazil would break the record for most victories in a year.

"We knew we would have to get through Brazil to win the Women's World Cup, and we think the 2000 Olympics will be no different," said U.S. Head Coach Tony DiCicco. "We enjoy playing Brazil because they bring out the best in us and we need as many games like that as possible to prepare to defend our title."

The USA is 9-1-1 all-time against Brazil and 4-1-1 in the last six meetings, two of which were 3-0 victories for the USA that were much closer than the score. Brazil is world's most improved women's national team during the 1990s, and bolstered by its Women's World Cup success, is gearing for a run at a world title in the first decade of the new millenium. Brazil comes to the USA to also participate in the NIKE U.S. Women's Cup '99, which will see the USA and the South Americans meet on Oct. 10 at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium in Louisville, Ky., which could be the championship match of the tournament.
