2002 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Third Round Action Begins Tonight; Eight MLS Teams to Face Eight A-League Opponents

CHICAGO (Tuesday, July 16, 2002) – The 2002 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup heats up again tonight with the MetroStars (MLS) taking on the Hampton Roads Mariners (A-League) at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex in Virginia Beach, Va. at 7:30 p.m. ET in the tournament's Third Round.

The rest of the 89-year-old single-elimination tournament's Third Round takes place on Wednesday with seven other MLS teams squaring off against seven A-League squads.  Those match-ups feature the Richmond Kickers (A-League) traveling to take on the Columbus Crew (MLS), the Chicago Fire (MLS) heading north to face the Milwaukee Rampage (A-League), the Rochester Raging Rhinos (A-League) hosting the Kansas City Wizards (MLS), the Dallas Burn (MLS) visiting the Atlanta Silverbacks(A-League), the Colorado Rapids (MLS) heading southeast to meet the Charleston Battery (A-League) and the San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) traveling to the Pacific Northwest to battle the Seattle Sounders (A-League). Lastly, the defending Open Cup champion Los Angeles Galaxy (MLS) will square off against the host Minnesota Thunder (A-League).
